Consumer Confidence Index

Rather than measuring what the economy is actually doing, the Consumer Confidence Index measures how people feel about it, surveying households on their views of current conditions and expectations for the next six months. It matters because confident consumers tend to spend more, and consumer spending makes up the majority of US economic activity, so a sustained drop in confidence can be an early warning sign for weaker growth ahead, even while other economic data still looks fine on paper.
