The Open Bell — Ep. 058 — 10 Sept 2026
Today on The Open Bell:
The ECB just raised interest rates again, and the reason is a war the eurozone isn't even fighting: oil above $100 a barrel means European inflation is climbing back up, which means the central bank is making borrowing more expensive for millions of people whose energy bills are already doing that job on their own.
The U.S. has now banned Canadian dairy, alcohol, and motorbikes, and Canada's been hitting back just as hard, so the next time you reach for a Canadian whisky or a wedge of aged cheddar, you might want to enjoy it while it lasts.
The U.S. Treasury tried to steady the bond market by tripling its debt buyback program to $6 billion and markets basically shrugged and pushed the 10-year yield, which is what your mortgage rate tracks most closely, to its highest point in nearly three years.
