Book Value

Book value is a company's total assets minus its total liabilities, essentially what would theoretically be left over for shareholders if the company sold everything it owns and paid off every debt today. It's calculated straight from the accounting books, hence the name, and it's often compared against a company's market capitalization to see whether the stock market is valuing a company well above, or sometimes below, what its raw assets are technically worth on paper.
