Alphabet Joins the Dow. Your Retirement Just Changed.

As of this morning's open, Alphabet replaces Verizon in the 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average — and because the Dow is price-weighted, not market-cap-weighted, this isn't just symbolic. At $340.36 a share versus Verizon's $45.44, Alphabet will carry roughly 7.5 times the daily price influence of the stock it replaced. Every point Alphabet moves will ripple through the index in a way Verizon never could.

  • Alphabet enters at ~$340.36, giving it an outsized per-share influence; Verizon fell 0.63% pre-market on forced passive-fund selling

  • The Dow closed near 52,100 the week prior — a record — driven by a broad rotation into industrials, financials and healthcare

  • Millions of 401(k) and pension holders tracking Dow products now carry meaningfully more exposure to AI, cloud, and Alphabet's stock-price swings

💬 Alphabet joining the Dow is a symbolic coronation: the company that runs the world's search engine, its biggest ad platform, and one of its top AI labs now officially sets the tone for the most famous stock index on Earth.

The ECB Is Hiking Again — and Southern Europe Is Paying for It

Markets fully priced a 25-basis-point ECB hike at the December 2026 meeting as of Sunday — meaning traders now expect the deposit facility rate to hit 2.50% by year-end, up from 2.25% after June's hike. That June decision was the ECB's first rate increase since 2023, and the central bank simultaneously cut its 2026 eurozone GDP forecast to just 0.8% while raising its inflation outlook. Stagflation, in other words. June's flash CPI print drops tomorrow, and a hot number could pull the next hike all the way forward to September.

  • December 2026 hike fully priced at 25 bp; deposit rate expected to reach 2.50%

  • Eurozone GDP forecast cut to 0.8% for 2026 — hiking into a slowdown is the uncomfortable reality

  • Variable-rate mortgage holders in Spain, Italy and Portugal face roughly €50–€70 more per year in interest for every 25 bp hike on a €200,000 loan — and there may be more coming

💬 The ECB was cutting rates in 2025. Now it's hiking them — because a war on the other side of the Mediterranean sent energy bills soaring.

Venezuela's Earthquake Is Now a Geopolitical Test

Five days after twin Mw 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Venezuela, the death toll has reached 1,450 — with USGS models putting a 44% probability the final figure lands between 10,000 and 100,000. The UNDP estimates damage at $4.7–$8.7 billion, roughly 6% of Venezuelan GDP, in a country whose economy is already 80% smaller than it was in 2013. U.S. Marines conducted a port survey at La Guaira on Sunday, and the USS Fort Lauderdale has delivered emergency supplies. La Guaira — Venezuela's main commercial port — is running at 75% electricity and 68% water capacity.

  • 1,450 confirmed dead as of June 28; UNDP damage estimate up to $8.7bn (~6% of GDP)

  • La Guaira port at 75% power, 68% water — recovery pace will determine whether Venezuela's 1.2 million bpd crude output returns to full capacity

  • For Venezuelans on the ground: 189 collapsed buildings, disrupted water, and an economy with almost nothing left to fall back on

💬 Venezuela just had its strongest earthquake in over a century — on top of an economy already 80% smaller than it was in 2013.

📰 Also Today

  • Brent crude holds near $73.40/bbl — down 35% from April's $114 peak as Strait of Hormuz tanker flows confirm open, though Trump's accusation that Iran fired on cargo ships near Oman keeps a $3–$5/bbl risk premium in place; U.S. pump prices could fall $0.40–$0.60/gallon over the next month if calm holds.

  • ASX 200 closes H1 2026 up just 0.50% — its weakest first half since 2022, with materials down 3.6% and IT off 5.71% in the final week alone; flat superannuation returns mean millions of Australians approaching retirement saw near-zero growth in the first six months of the year.

  • Dow breadth hits a two-decade high — 63% of S&P 500 stocks now trade above their 50-day moving average, up from 50% at the start of June, the broadest reading since 2003; the equal-weight rally is good news for diversified 401(k) holders, but June payrolls on July 2 will tell us if the foundation holds.
